Bhí an t-uafás teifigh soir ina líne ansin go dté tú soir go dtí an clochar ná a chuid siar den chlochar mar mar a thugadh siad sna seanlapaí fadó air ag dul siar roimhe sin arís.

There was a terrible number of refugees to the east in a line there as you go east to the convent or its western part of the convent as they used to call it in the old days, going west before that again...

Clochar West a bhí thíos dó.

Clochar West was below him.

Bhí seanreilig thoir ansin.

There was an old graveyard to the east there.

Ag teorainn.

At the border..

Bhí an bhí an bhí an t-uafás tife ansin bhí cúpla céad teach sa limistéar sin thart is cosúil ag an am.

There was, there was, there was a terrible crowd there, there were a couple of hundred houses in that area around, it seems, at the time.

Ach tá mé a cheapadh.

But I am thinking...

Bhí seanmhainistir na seanséipéal ann chomh maith.

There was the old monastery of the old church there as well.

Unconfirmed

taobh thoir de theorainn a bhailiú

to collect east of the border

Ach is áit an-seantaobh a bhí sa mbaile now.

But the town was a very out-of-the-way place now.

Agus tá sé tá sé ráite go raibh sí sin níos sine ná an seanreilig ar an bhall mór fadó.

And it is said that she was older than the old graveyard on the big spot long ago.

Is rud suimiúil é. Tá mé ag iarraidh leagan den amhrán a chasadh a Phádraig. Tá leagan de agus sílim gob é an leagan is coitianta ag Treasa Ní Mhiolláin cúpla véarsa agus tá seisean le fáil ar an dlúthcheirnín a chuir Raidió na Gaeltachta amach do bhuaiteoirí Chorn Uí Riada ach tá mé ag breathnú freisin ar leagan Pheatsaí Ó Ceannabháin agus déarfainn gurb é an leagan atá ag Peatsaí Ó Ceannabháin gurb é an leagan céanna atá in Amhrán Chlainne Gaeil faoin teideal Cúirt Bhaile an Bhuí Fada anois. Níl a fhios agam cé as a dtáinig an teideal agus ní mba léir do na Máille a chuir an t-amhrán a chuir an leabhar le chéile cé as a dtáinig an teideal ach an oiread ach déarfainn díreach ag éisteacht le leagan Pheatsaí Ó Ceannabháin gurb in é an leagan atá aige ó thaobh véarsaí de anois. Tá ceisteanna eile ag éirí i mo chloigeann a Phádraig ach caithfidh muid iad a phlé lá eile an t-amhrán sin a bhfuil cónaí an cailín óg taobh thíos den gheata mór ann.

It is an interesting thing. I am trying to play a version of the song, Patrick. There is a version of it and I think the most common version is by Treasa Ní Mhiolláin, a couple of verses, and that one is available on the CD that Raidió na Gaeltachta released for the winners of Corn Uí Riada, but I am also looking at Peatsaí Ó Ceannabháin’s version and I would say that the version Peatsaí Ó Ceannabháin has is the same version that is in Amhrán Chlainne Gaeil under the title "Cúirt Bhaile an Bhuí Fada" now. I don’t know where the title came from and it wasn’t clear to the O’Malleys who put the song, who compiled the book, where the title came from either, but I would say just from listening to Peatsaí Ó Ceannabháin’s version that that is the version he has in terms of verses now. Other questions are coming up in my head, Patrick, but we’ll have to discuss them another day, that song in which the young girl lives just below the big gate...

B'fhéidir go mbeifeá ag cuimhneamh air sin agus feicim i nótaí a Mhichíl Uí Ghallchóir freisin cúpla véarsa as Nóra Ní Chonchúir Bháin.

You might be thinking of that and I see in Micheál Ó Gallchóir’s notes as well a couple of verses from Nóra Ní Chonchúir Bhán.
