of this island of old, many tales have been told.

Of that place long-taled and storied.

Ceithre mhíle amach ó chósta na hEachléime i gContae Mhaigh Eo atá Inis Glóire suite.

Inis Glóire is situated four miles off the coast of Eachléim in County Mayo.

Oileán go deimhin go bhfuil stair go leor ag baint leis.

An island indeed that has a lot of history associated with it.

Tá sé ráite gur ann atá Clann Lir curtha agus tá sé ráite freisin gur ann a stop Naomh Breandán agus ar a bhealach go Meiriceá.

It is said that the Clan Lior are buried there and it is also said that Saint Brendan stopped there on his way to America.

Agus sin é an fáth go mbíonn lá mór acu ar an 15ú lá de Bhealtaine thuas ansin ar an Eachléim i gContae Mhaigh Eo agus go deimhin sna ceantair máguaird.

And that is the reason they have a big day on the 15th of May up there in Eachléim in County Mayo and indeed in the surrounding areas.

Up to four hundred people visited Inis Glóire this year and for the first time ever in twelve hundred years Mass was celebrated on the island and the glory, prayers, and historical conversation of the crowd spread across the sixty-six acres of Inis Glóire.

Another historic thing that happened on the island that day was that the granddaughter of the last two people to leave the island in 1934 was christened.

An t-ainm a tugadh ar an bpáiste Sorcha Maria Fionnuala.

The name given to the child was Sorcha Maria Fionnuala.

And, of course, the name Fionnuala came from the family..

Well, I myself didn’t manage to be on the trip to the island that day, but a couple of days afterwards I visited the Eachléim area.

And the first person I met there was Peatsaí Ó Catháin and he explained to me about the time he left the mainland to spend his life on Inis Glóire.
